 Structure

Deciding on music is another crucial factor for me personally. I Like to choreograph to the shape and contour of the music, the dynamics and velocity dictate the way I want to move. Because of how much impact music has on my work I need to know what I’m working with before I start any movement. I have decided on music for the first two sections but not yet the last as I’m  unsure the exact route I want to take in that section.

Music for the first section is “Change Is Everything” by Son Lux

Music for the second section is “Lost It To Trying” by Son Lux

The grid below shows the key sections in the development of ASIMO, a robot credited to be “ the most advanced humanoid robot in the world” (Obringer + Strickland n.d.). And the topic of the first section.

ASIMO (0 - 3.05)

1986

Just legs. 5 seconds between steps

1987-1991

E2 mimics human walk 1.2km/h. E3 3km/h

1991-1993

First autonomous locomotion model E5. E6 autonomous control of balance when going up or down stairs slopes or obstacles

1993-1997

First model with arms P1

2000

ASIMO is born. I-Walk

2002

“capable of interpreting postures and gestures of humans and moving autonomously in response” (Honda, 2020)

2005

“Full body coordination” (Honda, 2020)

2007

“More autonomous movement and task performance” (Honda, 2020)

2011

“capable of responding to the movement of people” (Honda, 2020)

The grid highlights stages in the development of ASIMO that I think could inspire different ways of moving, and give me sub sections to create. Breaking the sections down into smaller sections will make it easier to create a full 10 minute piece, as all of the sections above need to be around 20 seconds to fill the 3.05 minutes of music.

Machine learning/ inside the brain of ASIMO (3.06 - 7.48)

This section will almost be a look into the mind of ASIMO and how he learns. I will then expand from there looking into computerised machine learning. I want to show how computers use iterative learning to learn new tasks and how this is applicable to robots.

Future of AI/ robotics

This last section is still subject to change. However at the moment I would like to look into the future of robotics and artificial intelligence. This section can develop into different AI takeover conspiracies, an AI apocalypse, a robotic uprising, or wherever my research, music and movement take me.
