For this choreographic process I have chosen to take influence from the choreographer Rosie Kay. Rosie Kay is a choreographer based in Birmingham only twenty minutes away from where I live meaning I have had the opportunity to take contemporary class with one of her dancers for approximately two years. I have also seen her work MK Ultra live which in particular has influenced me in this process.
Initially, when deciding on my stimulus idea, conspiracy theories were a topic that really excited me. I attribute this in large part to watchink MK Ultra, a piece based on the conspiracy of the Illuminati. In an interview she states that “A theory behind this pop imagery is the illuminati” (R.Kay 2021). The theory suggests that the illuminati work with the government to control pop culture and mainstream media. The piece then goes further to look into a top secret CIA experiment that supposedly experimented on unwilling citizens of the US.
These ideas of media control and specifically pop culture lead me to decide upon the theory of a robot/ A.I uprising as the topic for the last section in my piece. Furthermore I have taken inspiration from the overall structure of her work. I have taken the umbrella category of A.I and split it up into my three distinct sections. Similar to how Rosie Kay took the umbrella idea of the illuminati and then took a deeper dive into the CIA experiment.
When talking about the research for her piece MK ULTRA she mentions she watches a lot of videos in her process (R.Kay 2021). This is something I have taken onboard for my own process. Watching videos of contemporary movement from a selection of different people has influenced my work as a whole. Possibly the most important takeaway from looking at her catalogue of works is that my choreography does not necessarily tell a narrative. Instead it can simply be a study into a topic or a look at a series of events, and from that I can make movement that displays these events. Ultimately this means the audience can interpret the piece as a whole in any way they see fit.
