Similar to MK Ultra, my choreography has no plot but rather shows a chronology of events. Starting with the invention of robotics and its development it progresses to computerised learning. However, where it differs from the Rosie Kay piece is in the final section. I will take a look into the future of A.I and decide whether I believe the theory of a robot uprising to be true.
I have now completed the first two sections of movement and have the structure for the third and final piece laid out. I have decided to take sections of movement from my previous two topics and enlarge them to fit this piece of music. This aims to show how the physical body of a robot and the coded software of machine learning become one in order to create sentient beings.
While personally I don't believe that an artificial intelligence uprising is likely, given the limitations even the most advanced works of A.I face. And a university of Huddersfield computer science lecturer further confirms my thoughts by suggesting that “there is no risk of a runaway AI, because physical laws of the universe pose some very constraining hard limits” (M.Vallati, 2020). I still think the topic is one that is interesting to consider and could inform some interesting movements and narrative. I would also like to include an easter egg of sorts in my final piece. 01000001, 01001001 are the binary codes for the letters A and I. I will base a section of movement around physically displaying each digit of the binary code for A.I
So far throughout this choreographic process there have been two main challenges. Firstly, combining a style, that is new for me, seamlessly with one that is more comfortable. To do this I have created a section of cross over. The end of the first piece gains full body mastery and begins to show more fluidity. And in order to blend the two the second piece starts with a similar more robotic, sharp movement to the beat of the music. The second challenge was settling on movements. I have chosen rich, textured music that has many layers to pick out. Choosing how to appropriately use my musicality was a big challenge, but to overcome this I constantly had to remind myself of the topic at hand. In the first piece it made sense to highlight the percussive layer as early robots could only function with staccato movements. The second piece needed to show trial and error so any repeated melodies were necessary to focus on. And the final piece will need to be explosive yet nuanced. For this I will use percussive highlights for the explosivity and lyrics for the detail and nuance of the vocals.
